U of T ranked first in Canada, 23rd globally in latest Shanghai academic and research rankings
The 重口味SM has once again been ranked the top Canadian university and among the top 25 universities in the world in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities.
The annual rankings by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy saw U of T move up one position to 23rd overall while ranking seventh among North American public universities and 12th among public universities globally.
U of T remained the top school in Canada , which looks at more than 2,000 universities and is based on academic prowess, research impact and the quality of its faculty, as measured by an array of indicators.
鈥淲e are delighted to be ranked the top Canadian university and one of the top 25 universities in the world by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, recognized for its rigour and detail in assessing the research and academic qualities of post-secondary institutions,鈥 said Cheryl Regehr, U of T鈥檚 vice-president and provost.
鈥淭hese results reflect the 重口味SM鈥檚 position as a world-leading public research university that boasts top-notch faculty and produces exceptional graduates across a wide range of disciplines.鈥
Compiled annually since 2003, the Academic Ranking of World Universities relies on six weighted measures to determine institutions鈥 academic and research performance. They include: the number of faculty and alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers; the number of papers published in the prestigious Nature and Science journals; papers cited in major citation indices; and the per capita performance of the institution.
The top five universities in the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities were unchanged from last year, with Harvard University ranked first followed by Stanford University, the University of Cambridge, MIT and the University of California, Berkeley, in that order.
Three other Canadian universities were ranked in the top 100, with the University of British Columbia, McGill University and McMaster University placing 38th, 78th and 98th respectively.
Overall, U of T continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and ranked among the top 25 universities globally in the five most closely watched international rankings: Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy鈥檚 Academic Ranking of World Universities, U.S. News & World Report鈥檚 Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.
