The air was buzzing with possibility"</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Reactions to <strong>Geoffrey Hinton’s</strong>&nbsp;<a href="/news/geoffrey-hinton-wins-nobel-prize">Nobel Prize win</a> began almost immediately after it was announced Tuesday morning. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Known as the “godfather of AI,” the <a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/">University Professor</a> Emeritus of computer science at the ؿζSM&nbsp;shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with<strong> John J. Hopfield are pictured during the announcement for the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics (photo by Jonathan Nackstrand/AFP via Getty Images)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p>At U of T, students, faculty and staff&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSCDoHsqV3E">gathered at an event</a> hosted by the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, which Hinton joined as a professor in 1987.</p> <p>Those in attendance described a revered and beloved figure, citing Hinton’s determination, playful approach to research and excitement for new ideas.</p> <p>"I really don’t think there’s anyone more deserving of this recognition," said&nbsp;<strong>Chris Maddison</strong>,&nbsp;assistant professor in U of T’s departments of computer science and statistical sciences, and one of Hinton’s former students.</p> <p>"Geoff was a fantastic adviser. Everything I know about how to do science, I mostly learned from him. It's his curiosity and playfulness ... that has been most impactful. The excitement, the joy radiated out of his office down the hall. The air was buzzing with possibility. He was famous for bursting into a room and pronouncing that, he now finally, after all these years, understood how the brain worked.&nbsp;Above all, he understood that research was a human endeavor. Research is really hard. It becomes personal. It's intertwined with tragedies and compromises. I saw him go through some of his own when I was a student in the group, and I went through my own. They invented neural networks that were not only inspired by the brain, but also by central notions in physics such as energy, temperature, system dynamics, energy barriers, the role of randomness and noise, connecting the local properties, e.g., of atoms or neurons, to global ones like entropy and attractors. And they went beyond the physics to show how these ideas could give rise to memory, learning and generative models; concepts which are still at the forefront of modern AI research. Their ideas inspired me so profoundly that I decided to choose learning in neural networks for my own research as a graduate student. They motivated me to look for abstract principles that could be as simple as the laws of physics, but could explain biological as well as artificial intelligence. Hopfield</strong>&nbsp;of Princeton University</a> for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.</p> <p>Hinton said he was “flabbergasted” at the honour <a href="/news/congratulations-pour-geoffrey-hinton-after-nobel-win">as messages poured in from around the world</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I had no expectations of this,” he told <em>U of T News</em> shortly after the win was announced in Stockholm Tuesday morning. “I am extremely surprised and I'm honoured to be included.”&nbsp;</p> <p>He later told reporters at a press conference he was “in a cheap hotel in California” with no Internet and a poor phone connection when he was notified about his Nobel Prize.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I was going to get an MRI scan today, but I think I’m going to have to cancel that.”</p> <p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen frameborder="0" height="422" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/H7DgMFqrON0?si=mlYtLrSwAPrzW5EZ" title="YouTube video player" width="750"></iframe></p> <p>Hinton and Hopfield are credited with wielding tools from physics to advance basic research in the field. In physics we use artificial neural networks in a vast range of areas, such as developing new materials with specific properties,” said&nbsp;<strong>Ellen Moons</strong>, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics.</p> <p>The win by Hinton and Hopfield was covered by media and other organizations around the&nbsp;globe, with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/08/science/nobel-prize-physics.html" target="_blank"><em>The New York Times</em>&nbsp;describing the Nobel committee’s decision</a> as “an acknowledgement of AI’s growing significance in the way people live and work,” and the prestigious journal&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-03213-8" target="_blank"><em>Nature</em>&nbsp;noting Hinton’s innovations</a> now “form the basis of many state-of-the-art AI tools.”</p> <p>Hinton joined U of T as a professor of computer science in 1987 after working in various universities in the U.K., where he was born, and in the United States.&nbsp;He went on to be named a University Professor – U of T’s highest academic appointment – in 2006.</p> <p>Driven by a desire to understand the human brain, Hinton and his graduate students built on his early efforts with an array of developments that paved the way for an explosion in deep learning. One of the first cohort of researchers supported by the <a href="https://cifar.ca" target="_blank">Canadian Institute for Advanced Research</a> (CIFAR), Hinton’s work helped catapult Canada to its current status as a global leader in AI development.</p> <p>The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the Nobel Prize in Physics,&nbsp;noted&nbsp;Hinton persisted with his research even as the scientific community lost interest in artificial neural networks during the 1990s, and ultimately “helped start the new explosion of exciting results” in the 2000s.</p> <p>Hinton, for his part, said during a U of T press conference Tuesday evening that his achievements wouldn’t have been possible without support for curiosity-based research – something he said Canada was good at.&nbsp;</p> <p>He added that his shock at winning the Nobel stemmed from the fact that, while his work has drawn on statistical physics, he isn’t a physicist himself – and even “dropped out of physics after my first year in university because I couldn’t do the complicated math.”</p> <p>He also said that he plans to donate the money associated with the prize to various charities, including one that provides jobs for neurodiverse young adults.</p> <p>Hinton likened the influence of AI to that of the Industrial Revolution during a virtual press conference with the academy earlier in the day&nbsp;– “But instead of exceeding people in physical strength, it’s going to exceed people in intellectual ability.”</p> <p>He added that the rise of AI “is going to be wonderful in many respects,” citing health care and workplace productivity as two areas poised to benefit hugely from the technology. “But we also have to worry about a number of possible bad consequences, particularly the threat of these things getting out of control,” Hinton said.</p> <p>In early 2023, Hinton quit his job at Google and focused on sounding the alarm about the risks of rapid and unfettered AI development. You’re not the kind of people we want to hire.’”<br> <br> During that time – and even today – Canada was considered by many to be what Cooper describes as “post-racial-nice,” having avoided the same depth and lasting racism found across the United States.</p> <p>But the reality was often very different.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“These things still happened here –&nbsp;not that long ago and even today –&nbsp;though the language has changed so the actions don’t appear nearly as racist,” says Cooper, an expert on Black Canadian slavery and Black Canadian studies who recently joined the department of historical and cultural studies at the ؿζSM Scarborough as a professor.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Cooper was raised in the Whithorn district of Westmoreland, Jamaica, in the post-independence era. "Now there are no excuses; we're writing curricula and guides with school boards, and we've partnered with government agencies responsible for education. Could AI go rogue and pose an existential threat to humanity? How have media portrayals of AI influenced people’s perceptions of the technology’s benefits and risks?</p> <p>These were among the pressing questions tackled by four experts at the ؿζSM and its partner institutions – in disciplines ranging from computer science to philosophy – during a recent panel discussion on AI safety.</p> <p><strong>Sheila McIlraith</strong>, professor in U of T’s department of computer science at the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science and Canada CIFAR AI Chair at the Vector Institute, said the notion of AI safety evokes different things to different people.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Computer scientists often think about safety critical systems – the types of systems that we’ve built to send astronauts to the moon or control our nuclear power plants – but AI safety is actually quite different,” said McIlraith, an associate director at the U of T’s <a href="https://srinstitute.utoronto.ca">Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society</a> (SRI).</p> <p>“For me personally, I have a higher bar, and I really think we should be building AI systems that promote human flourishing – that allow human beings to live with dignity and purpose, and to be valued contributors to society.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>The event, hosted by SRI in partnership with the <a href="https://vectorinstitute.ai">Vector Institute</a>, the <a href="https://ihpst.utoronto.ca">Institute for the History &amp; Philosophy of Science &amp; Technology</a>, the <a href="https://ethics.utoronto.ca">Centre for Ethics</a> and <a href="https://www.vic.utoronto.ca">Victoria College</a>, invited McIlraith and her fellow panelists to discuss how AI technologies can be aligned with human values in an increasingly automated world.</p> <p>They also discussed how risks surrounding the technology can be mitigated in different sectors.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-center"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/scale_image_750_width_/public/2024-09/_DJC7290-crop.jpg?itok=HAe8oD2Q" width="750" height="501" alt="&quot;&quot;" class="image-style-scale-image-750-width-"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>Karina Vold, the event’s moderator, underscored the challenge of building safe AI systems in an uncertain world (photo by Duane Cole)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p>Moderator,&nbsp;<strong>Karina Vold</strong>, assistant professor in the Institute for the History &amp; Philosophy of Science &amp; Technology in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, noted that because AI systems operate “in a world filled with uncertainty and volatility, the challenge of building safe and reliable AI is not easy and mitigation strategies vary widely.”&nbsp;</p> <p>She proceeded to ask the panel to share their thoughts on the portrayal of AI in popular culture.&nbsp;</p> <p>“The media devotes more attention to different aspects of AI – the social, philosophical, maybe even psychological,” said&nbsp;<strong>Sedef Kocak</strong>, director of AI professional development at the Vector Institute.&nbsp;</p> <p>“These narratives are important to help show the potential fears, as well as the positive potential of the technology.”</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-center"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/scale_image_750_width_/public/2024-09/_DJC7298-crop.jpg?itok=O2pDcVyg" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;" class="image-style-scale-image-750-width-"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>The discussion touched on several topics related to AI safety (photo by Duane Cole)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p><strong>Roger Grosse</strong>, associate professor in U of T’s department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science and a founding member of the Vector Institute, said that safety concerns around AI are not merely rooted in science and pop culture, but also in philosophy.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Many people think that the public’s concerns regarding AI risks come from sci-fi, but I think the early reasoning regarding AI risks actually has its roots in philosophy,” said Grosse, who also holds Schwartz Reisman Chair in Technology and Society.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“If we’re trying to reason about AI systems that don’t yet exist, we don’t have the empirical information, and don’t yet know what their design would be, what we can do is come up with various thought experiments. For example, what if we designed an AI that has some specific role, and all of the actions that it takes are in service of the role?</p> <p>“For the last decade, a lot of the reasons for being concerned about the long-term existential risks really came from this careful philosophical reasoning.”</p> <p>The discussion also touched on the dangers of AI models misaligning themselves, how to guard against bias in the training of large language models, and how to ensure that AI models with potentially catastrophic capabilities are safeguarded.</p> <p>“This [safeguarding] is an area where new research ideas and principles will be required to make the case,” said Grosse. “Developers saying, ‘Trust us’ is not sufficient. field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>The ؿζSM commemorated the official opening of&nbsp;<a href="https://indigenous.utoronto.ca/ziibiing/">Ziibiing</a>, an Indigenous landscape project that uses architecture, horticulture and storytelling to honour Indigenous cultures and provide a space for community members to gather, learn and host ceremonies on the St. George campus.</p> <p>The opening celebration for Ziibiing, held Monday Sept. 23, included a traditional Elder’s opening, a welcome song and the burning of a sacred fire – the first fire to be lit in Ziibiing’s pavilion and <a href="http://people.utoronto.ca/culture/indigenous-community/indigenous-ceremonial-practices/">one of&nbsp;several Indigenous ceremonial practices that are welcome on all Committee in collaboration with the&nbsp;<a href="https://brookmcilroy.com/projects/service/indigenous-design-studio/">Indigenous Design Studio</a>&nbsp;at Brook McIlroy, who in turn consulted with Indigenous students, faculty, staff, the&nbsp;<a href="https://indigenous.utoronto.ca/about/knowledge-keepers-faculty/#:~:text=Council%20of%20Indigenous%20Initiatives%20Elders%E2%80%99%20Circle">Council of Indigenous Initiatives Elders' Circle</a>&nbsp;and representatives of local First Nations.</p> <p>The project was born out of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/sites/155/2018/05/Final-Report-TRC.pdf">Answering the Call: Wecheehetowin</a>, the final report of the Steering Committee for the ؿζSM Response disciplines can come together to assist in placemaking, according to<strong>&nbsp;James Bird</strong>, a Knowledge Keeper from the Nehiyawak and Dene Nation and PhD candidate in the John H. Innovation</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/st-michael-s-hospital" hreflang="en">St. Michael's Hospital</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">CHARTWatch, an artificial intelligence early warning system developed at&nbsp;Unity Health Toronto,&nbsp;alerts physicians when hospital patients face a high risk of unexpected death or transfer to an ICU</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>A new study by Toronto researchers evaluates the use of&nbsp;<a href="https://unityhealth.to/2024/07/innovating-care-experience-with-ai/" target="_blank">CHARTWatch</a>, an artificial intelligence early warning system developed at&nbsp;Unity Health Toronto&nbsp;that monitors hospitalized patients in real-time, identifies those at high risk of unexpected death or transfer to an intensive care unit, and alerts doctors and nurses to intervene early.</p> <p>The&nbsp;study, <a href="https://www.cmaj.ca/content/196/30/E1027" target="_blank">published in the&nbsp;<em>Canadian Medical Association Journal</em></a>, shows a 26 per cent reduction in unanticipated mortality after the tool was implemented in the general internal medicine ward of&nbsp;Unity Health Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital.</p> <p>“As AI tools are increasingly being used in medicine, it is important that they are evaluated carefully to ensure that they are safe and effective,” says lead author&nbsp;<strong>Amol Verma</strong>, general internist at Unity Health and professor in the&nbsp;department of medicine&nbsp;in the ؿζSM’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine who led the development and implementation of CHARTWatch.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2024-09/Verma-Mamdani-crop.jpg" width="350" height="233" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>Amol Verma (L) and Muhammad Mamdani (supplied images)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p>“Our findings suggest that AI-based early warning systems are promising for reducing unexpected deaths in hospitals.”</p> <p>One of the primary sources of unplanned admission to the ICU is the unexpected deterioration of hospitalized patients, which prompted the research team to develop this AI tool and study its effectiveness.&nbsp;</p> <p>“This important study evaluates the outcomes associated with the complex deployment of the entire AI solution, which is critical to understanding the real-world impacts of this promising technology,” says study co-author&nbsp;<strong>Muhammad Mamdani</strong>, vice president of data science and advanced analytics at Unity Health and director of U of T’s Temerty Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education in Medicine.</p> <p>“We hope other institutions can learn from and improve upon Unity Health Toronto’s experiences to benefit the patients they serve.”&nbsp;</p> <p>The study analyzed data from 13,649 patients aged 55 to 80 years old admitted to the general internal medicine unit (9,626 in the pre-intervention period and 4,023 using CHARTWatch) and 8,470 admitted to subspeciality units that did not use CHARTWatch.</p> <h4>Helping to prioritize patient needs</h4> <p>“The CHARTWatch project started at Unity Health when we asked patients, clinicians, hospital leaders, what would you want to use artificial intelligence for? If you could predict one thing that AI would tell you, what should that be?” says Verma, who is also&nbsp;the Temerty Professor of AI Research and Education in Medicine.</p> <p>“And one of the leading priorities of everyone was to be able to predict in advance which patients might become so sick in hospital that they need ICU or might die.”&nbsp;</p> <p>During the 19-month-long intervention period, 482 patients in the general internal medicine became high-risk, compared with 1,656 patients who became high risk in the 43-month-long pre-intervention period. There were also fewer non-palliative deaths in the CHARTWatch group than in the pre-intervention group (1.6 per cent versus 2.1 per cent).&nbsp;</p> <p>“If I were a patient, I would be so relieved to know that we have this kind of system,” said co-author&nbsp;<strong>Yuna Lee</strong>, division head and general internist at St. Michael’s and professor in the department of medicine at U of T.</p> <p>“So, when the patient gets a high-risk alert, they’re going to be assessed by senior staff right away. Also, they’re going to have quite close monitoring by nursing staff, so they check on them every one to two hours.”</p> <h4>Expanding the impact of CHARTWatch</h4> <p>CHARTWatch inputs more than 100 aspects of a patient’s medical history and current health status that are routinely stored in the hospital’s electronic medical record. It analyzes the interactions between these inputs and how they change over time. The gift will also support programming and faculty development –&nbsp;in collaboration with hospital partners such as Scarborough Health Network and Michael Garron Hospital – helping to ensure that SAMIH learners have access to a world-class education right in Scarborough and the Eastern GTA.</p> <p>The ؿζSM will name the new building the Myron and Berna Garron Health Sciences Complex, in honour of the Garrons’ exceptional generosity.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“Myron and Berna Garron’s extraordinary benefaction will help us to realize our vision for the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health – to educate health-care professionals from the region, in the region and for the region,” said&nbsp;<strong>Meric Gertler</strong>, president of U of T. “On behalf of the ؿζSM, I thank them for their leadership in the advancement of this crucial mission.”</p> <h4>Helping to revitalize the health-care landscape</h4> <p>SAMIH, the first hub for educating health professionals in Scarborough and the Eastern GTA and the only medical school in the region, was established to address the critical shortage of&nbsp;family physicians and specialists&nbsp;in the fast-growing area&nbsp;by&nbsp;training health providers who reflect the community. The training will take place in partnership with local hospitals,&nbsp;primary care centres and community agencies.</p> <p>Once the program is fully up and running, SAMIH will have 160 medical students and a combined total of 252 physician assistants, physical therapists and nurse practitioners enrolled.&nbsp;Three top-ranked U of T faculties – the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, the&nbsp;Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing and the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy – will expand educational programming to this hub.&nbsp;These students will be based at&nbsp;the new Myron and Berna Garron Health Sciences Complex, which will also serve as a base for U of T Scarborough undergraduates studying health sciences.</p> <p>The Myron and Berna Garron Health Sciences Complex, currently under construction, will feature an anatomy lab for medical students, two large classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, a 25-bed clinical skills lab and 10 instructional labs.&nbsp;To provide hands-on learning and serve the community directly, the facility will&nbsp;house three teaching clinics offering public services: a clinical psychology clinic, a nurse practitioner clinic and a satellite of U of T’s Discovery Pharmacy.</p> <p>SAMIH medical trainees will undertake clinical rotations at several area hospitals, including&nbsp;Scarborough Health Network, Lakeridge Health, Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences and&nbsp;Michael Garron Hospital – named in memory of Myron and Berna Garron’s late son, who was born there and later died of cancer at the age of 13. Innovation</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/rotman-school-management" hreflang="en">Rotman School of Management</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">Researchers found that works featuring changes of fortune, or turning points, were more popular and received better audience reviews</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Writers and scholars have long debated what makes for a great story, but&nbsp;<strong>Samsun Knight</strong>&nbsp;wanted to see whether there was a way to empirically determine which stories will be snore fests and which will leave audiences hungry for more.&nbsp;</p> <p>Using a scientist’s tools, the novelist and economist found that “narrative reversals,” or peripeteias,&nbsp;were the key factor –&nbsp;lots of them and the bigger the better.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2024-09/samsun-knight-crop.jpg" width="300" height="300" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>Samsun Knight (supplied image)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p>Commonly known as changes of fortune or turning points, where characters’ fortunes swing from good to bad and vice versa, Knight and his colleagues found that stories rich in these mechanisms boosted popularity and engagement with audiences through a range of media, from television to crowdfunding pitches.</p> <p>“The best-written stories were always either ‘building up’ a current reversal, or introducing a new plot point,” says Knight, an assistant professor of marketing at the ؿζSM’s Rotman School of Management.</p> <p>“In our analysis, the best writers were those that were able to maintain both many plot points and strong build-up for each plot point across the course of the narrative.”</p> <p>The research, co-authored with <strong>Matthew D. Rocklage</strong> and <strong>Yakov Bart&nbsp;</strong>of Boston’s Northeastern University, was <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/full/10.1126/sciadv.adl2013">recently published in the journal <em>Science Advances</em></a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>For the study, the researchers analyzed nearly 30,000 television shows, movies, novels, and crowdfunding pitches using computational linguistics, a blend of computer science and language analysis. The approach allowed them to quantify not only the number of a reversals in a text but also their degree or intensity by assigning numerical values to words based on how positive or negative they were.</p> <p>Movies and television shows with more and bigger reversals were better rated on the popular ratings site IMDb. Books with the most and biggest reversals were downloaded more than twice as often as books with the fewest reversals from the free online library Project Gutenberg. And GoFundMe pitches with more and larger reversals were as much as 39 per cent more likely to hit their fundraising goals.</p> <p>The Greek philosopher Aristotle was the first to identify peripeteia as a key feature of a good story, with <em>Oedipus Rex </em>serving as a classic example. Other thinkers have since added their ideas, including American playwright and dramaturg Leon Katz, whose scholarship particularly inspired Knight’s research.</p> <p>“[Katz] described the reversal as the basic unit of narrative – just as a sentence is the basic unit of a paragraph, or the syllogism is the basic unit of a logical proof,” Knight says.</p> <p>In addition to helping psychologists understand how narrative works to educate, inform and inspire people, the findings may also benefit storytellers of all kinds.</p> <p>“Hopefully our research can help build a pedagogy for writers that allows them to rely on the accumulated knowledge of Aristotle et al. without having to reinvent the wheel on their own every time,” says Knight.</p> <p>That includes himself. Innovation</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/university-health-network" hreflang="en">University Health Network</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">"This could be a game-changer for treating complex conditions where targeting multiple pathways is beneficial, such as cancer and viral infections"</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Researchers at the ؿζSM and its hospital partners have developed a method for co-delivering therapeutic RNA and potent drugs directly into cells, potentially leading to a more effective treatment of diseases.</p> <p>The research, <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adma.202403701" target="_blank">published recently in the journal <em>Advanced Materials</em></a>, explores how ionizable drugs can be used to co-formulate small interfering RNA (siRNA) for more effective intracellular delivery.</p> <p>The team –&nbsp;including <strong>Molly Shoichet</strong>, the study’s corresponding author and a <a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/">University Professor</a>&nbsp;in U of T’s department of chemical engineering and applied chemistry in the Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering – specifically targeted drug-resistant cells with the delivery of a relevant siRNA.&nbsp;The siRNA&nbsp;was&nbsp;discovered study co-author and collaborator&nbsp;<strong>David Cescon</strong>, a clinician scientist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network, and an associate professor in U of T’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine.</p> <p>“We found that our co-formulation method not only potently delivered siRNA to cells but also simultaneously delivered active ionizable drugs,” said research lead author&nbsp;<strong>Kai Slaughter</strong>, a PhD candidate in Shoichet’s lab.</p> <p>“This could be a game-changer for treating complex conditions where targeting multiple pathways is beneficial, such as cancer and viral infections.”</p> <p>siRNA is a powerful tool in medicine, capable of silencing specific genes responsible for disease, but delivering these molecules into cells without degradation remains a significant challenge. While recent innovations in ionizable lipid design have led to efficiency improvements, traditional nanoparticle formulations are limited in the amount of small molecule drugs they can carry.</p> <p>When therapeutic formulations are absorbed by cells, small molecule drugs and siRNA are often trapped in small compartments called endosomes, preventing them from reaching their target destination and reducing their effectiveness.</p> <p>The research team discovered that combining siRNA with ionizable drugs – compounds that change their charge based on pH levels – enhances the stability and delivery efficiency of siRNA inside cells, helping both the siRNA and drug escape the endosome and more effectively reach their destination. It is a space to work and gather together, share and pass tradition with everyone.</p> <p>“That’s the beautiful aspect of it and I hope it continues to grow at UTM.”&nbsp;</p> <p><a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/all-nations-powwow/">The free Sept. 28 event</a> is hosted by the U of T Mississauga Indigenous Centre (UTMIC) and will be held on the north field in front of Maanjiwe nendamowinan, also known as MN.&nbsp;</p> <p>Moving the event to an outdoor venue is welcome news for Hupfield, who specializes in grass dancing.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Traditionally, when our people relocate, folks are sent out ahead to pat down the grass to allow work and settling to be done on the land,” he says. “It is done with song and ceremony –&nbsp;so when the people arrive, they know this place is safe. It is a way of taking care of the community.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Community is a huge part of Powwows, adds Hupfield, who pursued his postdoctoral research in Indigenous forms of movement on both the U of T Mississauga and St. George campuses.&nbsp;</p> <p>He says he is honoured to have been asked to lead the dancers into this year’s Powwow as part of the grand entry ceremony.&nbsp;</p> <p>“It’s really humbling,” says Hupfield, who&nbsp;also assists&nbsp;the UTMIC with firekeeping in the Tipi on Principal’s Road for events that require sacred fire, as well as giving guest talks and dance demonstrations. “It’s a big responsibility and a chance to invite and honour all who came before us.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Among the dancers he will be leading is&nbsp;<strong>MJ Singleton</strong>, a fourth-year U of T Mississauga student who is double majoring in psychology and criminology law and society.</p> <p>Singleton, who is Anishinaabe and a two-spirit person, will be participating in both the fancy shawl and jingle dress events. They say&nbsp;they became involved in the Powwow through host group UTMIC, where they have participated in beadwork seminars and luncheons, led a paint session and helped create a community art installation&nbsp;for the MN building. Singleton says the centre, and&nbsp;Office of Indigenous Initiatives&nbsp;Director&nbsp;<strong>Tee Duke</strong>&nbsp;and Special Projects Officer&nbsp;<strong>Jessica Tabak</strong>, have been vital in helping them adjust to life at university.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I didn’t grow up in a city –&nbsp;I was in a small northwestern town, four hours west of Thunder Bay, so coming from there and transitioning to Mississauga was a big challenge,” says Singleton, 21.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Through the Indigenous Centre, I was able to meet people who were having a similar experience moving from up north to the hustle and bustle of southern Ontario. They gave us community.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Singleton, who&nbsp;<a href="/news/anishinaabe-student-shares-inspiration-behind-u-t-s-2023-orange-shirt-day-design">designed the Every Child Matters charity shirt</a>&nbsp;sold in campus bookstores, says hosting an event like a Powwow at U of T Mississauga goes a long way to help Indigenous students overcome their feelings of isolation, and that the gathering and amplifying of Indigenous voices on campus is an important part of U of T’s ongoing reconciliation process.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“To be able to see everyone in person and celebrate with other people is really important,” says Singleton, who plans to take their U of T Mississauga education home to Migisi Sahgaigan First Nation (Eagle Lake) to help improve legal representation for Indigenous people in northern communities.</p> <p>“Having access is especially important for those who have never been to a Powwow.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Singleton says the benefits are magnified in places like U of T Mississauga, which draws students from around the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“UTM has such an amazing and diverse population of international students and local students who have never seen a Powwow, so this is a chance to learn about our culture,” Singleton says, noting they discovered a new relative through interaction at last year’s event.</p> <p>“One of my best friends is from Peru and she thought last year’s Powwow, her first, was the most amazing thing. We had so much fun and I was so proud.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Singleton says they hope many first-timers will turn out for the event and share in the spirit of community.&nbsp;In addition to a full afternoon of traditional ceremonies, singing and dancing, there will also be a marketplace featuring Indigenous-owned businesses.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Come with an open mind, come with an open heart,” Singleton says. “Get to know the people in regalia, make those connections, form friendships and celebrate us as a people. It’s wonderful to be able to invite people of all kinds to dance during&nbsp;intertribal.
