Canadian Academy of Health Sciences

Fifteen faculty members from U of T have been elected fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) for 2024 in recognition of excellence in health sciences.

Election to CAHS fellowship is considered one of the highest honours for individuals in the Canadian health sciences community.

“Election to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences acknowledges outstanding contributions to the health sciences,” said Trevor Young, U of T's vice-president and provost and the president of CAHS, in a press release. “We are proud of these fellows’ accomplishments, and we are honoured to welcome them to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.”

The U of T scholars elected to 2024 CAHS fellowships are:

Jordan Feld at the University Health Network and the department of medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine
Eleanor Fish at the University Health Network and the department of immunology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine
Liisa Galea at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the department of psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine
Susan George at the University Health Network and the department of pharmacology and toxicology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine

Thirteen �ؿ�ζSM researchers have been named Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) in recognition of their leadership, creativity and commitment to advancing academic health sciences.

One of three national academies that make up the Council of Canadian Academies, the CAHS leverages the expertise of Canada’s leading health sciences researchers to evaluate Canada's most urgent and complex health challenges and recommend strategic, actionable solutions. To be named a CAHS Fellow is considered one of the highest distinctions for academics in the health sciences field in Canada.

“The �ؿ�ζSM congratulates these leading researchers on this important recognition of their work,” says Barbara Fallon, U of T’s associate vice-president, research. “This reaffirms what we saw in the recent Nature rankings, which placed U of T second in the world among health sciences research universities, and the recent NTU rankings, which placed U of T second among the world’s top research universities in the category of medicine.

“Across disciplines, fuelled by the collaboration between the 14 research hospitals in the Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN), these researchers are making discoveries and advancements that have a real impact on the some of the most complex health challenges facing Canadians.”

Professor Sioban Nelson of the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing has been appointed president of the board of directors of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) – the first time a nurse has been named to the role.

The prestigious honour recognizes Nelson’s renown as an academic leader and her commitment to using science-based decision-making to improve the health of all Canadians. Nelson is a former dean of the Faculty of Nursing and former vice-provost, academic programs and vice-provost, faculty and academic life, at the �ؿ�ζSM.

“The pandemic has heightened the importance of scholarly and scientific societies,” says Nelson. “We are living in a moment where there is increasing public distrust in science, and we have an opportunity to shift that by using our collective expertise and scientific evidence to foster trust and support for policy-makers and governments in their decisions.”

Nelson says she is eager to build on the collaborative and multi-disciplinary foundation of the CAHS, further its commitment to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism and ensure the organization uses “its voice and wealth of knowledge” to support the health of Canadians.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us,” says Nelson, “but we also have a great opportunity to leverage the expertise of Canadian health scientists, pave the way for the next generation of leaders, and continue to contribute to improving the health of Canadians.”
